As I see music education . . .
Today, while many ideas and practices continually arrive upon and fade from the scene, some things seem to hold perennial interest for many people. One of these is the study and experience of music. Piano lessons are probably the most popular route to beginning formal music instruction. Children want to learn, parents want their children to study, and adults want to begin or continue their own study.
My role as a piano teacher is that of guiding students in their learning of a new language. The sounds of this new language have meanings and require re-creation and interpretation to come to life. Students grow in comprehension of the language through a well-planned course of study, in which music appropriate to their level of development is analyzed and played. The tools for performing and understanding are thus developed simultaneously.
Music-making should be a shared experience, and communication with others completes the joy of learning and accomplishment. Therefore, I have provided opportunities throughout the year for my students to grow in poise and confidence as performers, and equally important, to develop as knowledgeable, sensitive listeners.
I am firmly convinced of the importance of establishing solid foundations upon which students can build-not necessarily intending that they become professional musicians-but that they become literate, skilled, knowledgeable and willing to share in an art which will continue to enrich the lives of us all.
